US has leverage over Israel on Iran but avoids political cost: Analysis

Trita Parsi, Executive Vice President of the Quincy Institute, told Al Jazeera that Trump’s early G7 exit likely precedes an ultimatum demanding Iran cease all uranium enrichment, or face US military strikes. He dismissed Iran’s acceptance as unlikely, noting capitulation wouldn’t halt Israeli attacks on its missile programmes. While Tehran seeks talks, it insists on a ceasefire first. Parsi stressed the US could restrain Netanyahu but avoid the political cost. He warned that Trump’s isolationist base fiercely opposes war, complicating escalation in his final term.
Crucially, he noted sparing Khamenei may be tactical: the Supreme Leader’s anti-nuclear fatwa prevents weaponisation—a restraint his assassination could undo.
