Syria’s Aleppo region hit by severe floods after dam collapse

Heavy rainfall in northwestern Syria has triggered multiple dam collapses across southern Aleppo province, submerging more than five and a half square kilometres of farmland and homes. Years of civil conflict have left dams and irrigation systems neglected and vulnerable. Farmers with limited resources are building makeshift barriers and pumping water in a desperate bid to protect their livelihoods. Local authorities have appealed to the government and aid organisations for emergency support, but many fear financial help will not materialise once floodwaters recede.
