Cuba’s fuel crisis forces shift to electric tricycles and bicycle taxis

Cuba is confronting one of its worst fuel shortages in decades, prompting a dramatic shift in Havana’s transport landscape as classic cars give way to electric tricycles and bicycle taxis. Severe fuel scarcity has also triggered widespread power cuts, forcing drivers to charge vehicles whenever electricity is available, with some mounting solar panels to cope with grid failures. Electric tricycles now carry up to eight passengers, functioning as makeshift buses, though fares remain expensive for many residents. The shift highlights the lengths to which the island must go to maintain basic mobility amid deepening economic hardship.
