Fentanyl focus of US-China talks: Washington pushes for stricter controls

Fentanyl-related trade tensions are taking center stage in US-China talks. US President Donald Trump says he expects to lower fentanyl-linked tariffs on China during his upcoming meeting with President Xi Jinping in South Korea. The reduction — potentially cutting current 20 percent tariffs in half — depends on Beijing’s commitment to tighter controls on the export of chemicals used to make fentanyl. The issue has long been central to economic disputes between Washington and Beijing.
