Week 17 delivered an incredible run of glove robberies, desperation stops, and save-of-the-year candidates as NHL goaltenders put on a show heading into the Olympic break.
Philadelphia’s Dan Vladar was spectacular, flashing the glove twice against Columbus to rob Adam Fantilli and Boone Jenner, then later sprawling again to keep out a floating chance against Washington. Colorado’s MacKenzie Blackwood denied Brady Tkachuk with a full-extension glove, while Seattle’s Joey Daccord showed great effort battling through a rebound chance against Toronto.
Dallas netminder Jake Oettinger stayed patient in the shootout against fellow USA Olympic teammate Jack Eichel, then later returned with a huge overtime breakaway stop on Mark Scheifele. Ilya Sorokin, Linus Ullmark, and Sergei Bobrovsky all joined the glove-save party with clean robberies on Michael Bunting, Dougie Hamilton, and Kyle Connor.
In Los Angeles, Anton Forsberg made a dandy glove save on Taylor Hall, while defenseman Drew Doughty added a scorpion-like skate save in the same game. Toronto’s Joseph Woll reached back with the stick to deny a wild Calgary carom, and Anthony Stolarz threw his body across to stop Leon Draisaitl in a rivalry matchup.
Andrei Vasilevskiy dove back to shut down a Buffalo wraparound, Brandon Bussi delivered a pair of jaw-dropping Ottawa denials, and Kevin Lankinen sprawled out to stop a Vegas 2-on-1. In Vegas, Akira Schmid made an improbable diving glove stop on P.O. Joseph, while Calgary’s Devin Cooley stunned the crowd by stopping Connor McDavid without a skate blade.
The week closed with Logan Thompson robbing Jonathan Marchessault on a 2-on-0, one of the most phenomenal saves of the season.
