Portugal elects Socialist Party’s Seguro as president in landslide

Moderate socialist Antonio Jose Seguro has been elected president of Portugal with roughly two-thirds of the vote, defeating far-right rival Andre Ventura. Despite the decisive margin, nearly half of eligible voters abstained, and Ventura’s Chega party has emerged as the main opposition force in parliament after less than a decade. The presidency is largely ceremonial, but Seguro faces the challenge of easing social tensions over living costs whilst trying to stem rising populist support.
